CHILHAM is a railway station and extensive parish in the
lathe of Shepway, 76 miles from London, five S.W. from Canterbury, and nine N.E.
from Ashford. The population was, in 1851, 1,247. The church of Saint Mary is an
old and handsome building; the living is a vicarage, in the patronage of J. B.
Wildman, Esq., and incumbency of the Rev. R. O. Tylden, M.A. Boarland and
Whitehall are half a mile north; Saleshill is three-quarters of a mile west ;
Ensden, I½ miles
north ; Multing, two miles N.W. ; Snattenden, two miles -west ; Dane Street, two
miles west ; Mountain Street, half-a-mile south; West Broadham, half-a-mile
south ; East Steward, one mile south; Penny Pot, two miles south, gives name to
a very large wood, two miles in length and breadth.
