Albion Hotel, The Parade, Margate

The Albion Hotel dates from at least 1848 starting its life as one of the many lodging establishments lining this street at the time. In the early 1860's the Hotel was acquired by the famous Drury Lane clown Harry Boleno. In those days the Hotel was full of his visiting fans and though retired he would perform impromptu 'clowning. The pub has another claim to fame, it appeared in a scene in Last Orders a 2001 film starring Michael Caine and Bob Hoskins.
In 1929 Percy Bosworth Osborne bought the Pub and stayed as Licensee until 1935. Mayor of Margate for 1930/1, Percy had moved to Margate in 1919 after being given six months to live as he had problems with his chest, throat and lungs. Fondly known as the 'optimistic Mayor', Percy was found dead in a gas filled room at the Phoenix Inn in King Street in 1940, of which eh was licensee. Now named Barnacles and under the chain of Thorley's, Manager Nigel Avery has been at the helm since 1990.

I get hundreds of emails every day, fortunately most 'spam mails' are deleted by my mail scan settings. The final emails are delivered to various email addresses, and replying to these are not always successful. If you do not hear from me in a timely fashion, please feel free to email again, I do not mind! This is a pure PUBS history site, I doubt if I know where the PUBS are NOW, but try the site for where they were a hundred years ago, again enjoy!
