The Historical Directory of Pubs in the South East of England, including London

Search the Historical Pubs site for the South East of England by street address, surname and known pub names powered by FreeFind
If you have a query then try the search engine first, if you have something to add to the historical Pubs site, please email - and as an added incentive, - if you offer useful information for a Public House or Beer House, then I will usually add lots of extra detail / landlords. All non-copyright pictures are always welcome; BUT, if I do not have relevant pictures on the site, then I do not know where to find them.

Dirty Dicks, 202 Bishopsgate, Bishopsgate EC2M 4NR

This is a famous pub, largely through its name. The history suggests that it was just a wine bar (historically) for much of its life! The current address places it at the corner of Sweedland Court, and this has not changed since at least the 1850s, although the address has, being originallly at '48 & 49 Bishopsgate Street without' in 1882, and at 202 by 1915; it has always been a few doors away from the Woodins Shades.

In 1915 & 1921, for example, the wine bar is number 202, at the corner of Sweedland Court; Middlesex Street is at 210; Catherine Wheel Alley is at 194, and the Woodins Shades is at 212. The 1921 directory includes DD's as part of the name - Dirty Dicks!

A listing of historical public houses, Taverns, Inns, Beer Houses and Hotels in Bishopsgate - St Botolphs, London. The Bishopsgate , London listing uses information from census, Trade Directories and History to add licensees, bar staff, Lodgers and Visitors.

I get hundreds of emails every day, fortunately most 'spam mails' are deleted by my mail scan settings. The final emails are delivered to various email addresses, and replying to these are not always successful. If you do not hear from me in a timely fashion, please feel free to email again, I do not mind! This is a pure PUBS history site, I doubt if I know where the PUBS are NOW, but try the site for where they were a hundred years ago, again enjoy!
