The Historical Directory of Pubs in the South East of England, including London

Search the Historical Pubs site for the South East of England by street address, surname and known pub names powered by FreeFind
If you have a query then try the search engine first, if you have something to add to the historical Pubs site, please email - and as an added incentive, - if you offer useful information for a Public House or Beer House, then I will usually add lots of extra detail / landlords. All non-copyright pictures are always welcome; BUT, if I do not have relevant pictures on the site, then I do not know where to find them.

The new bar recently opened at the Chandos, St martins Lane, with its graceful murals and curved counter, it is well worth a visit. But the old bar, and particularly the counter, had its interest for the customer.

Fiji troops in this country made the Chandos their unofficial headquarters during the 1914-18 War and many of them carved their names on the counter. During the last war, the sons of the men who carved their names came to the house and added their own. When the house was being renovated, two of the 1914-18 veterans from Fiji called and were horrified to find the counter removed. They called at the Brewery in Brick lane and the Directors gave them the old counter, which has now been cleaned and polished. It will be sent to Suva, the capital of Fiji, where it will be an unofficial war monument. (1951 - Black eagle)***

I get hundreds of emails every day, fortunately most 'spam mails' are deleted by my mail scan settings. The final emails are delivered to various email addresses, and replying to these are not always successful. If you do not hear from me in a timely fashion, please feel free to email again, I do not mind! This is a pure PUBS history site, I doubt if I know where the PUBS are NOW, but try the site for where they were a hundred years ago, again enjoy!
