Spotted Cow, Harwich Road, Colchester
Spotted Cow, Harwich Road (also known as
Red Cow, and later the Flying Fox)
I have a copy of a document from a Colchester solicitor relating to a case heard
at the County Court held at Colchester, 20 April 1866. John Vince of Ardleigh,
farmer, plaintiff versus John Wenden, of Great Bromley, farmer, defendant. (John
Wenden was an ancestor of my late wife)
Evidence of James Gardner - who had worked for Wenden for the past thirteen
years: ‘The night was dark, with no moon. Near to the Red Cow or Flying Fox
(Harwich Road, Colchester) he collided with another vehicle…’ **
