FRATING, 6 miles E. S. E. of Colchester, is a pleasant village and parish, containing 271 souls and 1233 acres of land, bounded on the east and west by two rivulets, which run to the creeks of Alresford and Brightlingsea. A large portion of it is in the manors of Great Bromley, Moverons, and Wix, and the rest is in the manor of Frating Hall, which belongs to Caius College, Cambridge. The other principal landowners are P. Thompson, J. Boghurst, W. Caldecott, Miss Adams, R. Bacon, W. Cant, and B. Brown, Esq. The parish is called Fretingham in Domesday Book, and part of it was held of the Honor of Tutbury, by the Ferrers family.
The Church is a small structure, in the early English style, and a new window has recently been inserted at the east end. The rectory, valued in K. B. at £10, and in 1831 at £809, with that of Thorrington annexed to it, is in the patronage of St. John's College, Cambridge, and incumbency of the Rev. Rd. Duffield, B. D., who was appointed 1832, and has a large and handsome Rectory House, of white brick, encompassed by beautiful pleasure grounds, laid out and planted with great taste. The advowson was purchased by St. John's College, about 1744.

FRATING, a parish in Tendring district, Essex; 2 miles ENE of Wivenhoe r. station, and 6 ESE of Colchester. It has a post-office under Colchester. Acres, 1,237. Real property, £3,373. Pop., 235. Houses, 51. The property is divided among a few. Frating Hall is a principal residence. The living is a rectory, united with the rectory of Thorington, in the diocese of Rochester. Value, £799. Patron, St. John's College, Cambridge. The church is early English and is very good.

FRATING is an ancient village and parish, 1½ miles north-north-west from Thorrington station on the Tendring Hundred branch of the London and North Eastern railway, 6 east-by-south from Colohester and 58 from London, in the Harwich division of the county, Tendring hundred, petty sessional division and rural district, Colchester, Clacton and Halstead joint county court district, rural deanery of St. Osyth, archdeaconry of Colchester and Chelmsford diocese. The church (name unknown) is an ancient edifice of stone in the Early English style, pleasantly situated, and consists of chancel, nave of two bays, north aisle, north porch and an embattled western tower containing 3 bells: the church was restored and enlarged in 1872 and has several stained windows: there are 150 sittings. The register dates from the year 1560. The living is a rectory, with that of Thorrington annexed, joint net yearly value £570, with 109 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of St. John’s College, Cambridge, and held since 1932 by the Rev. Henry Wilcox M.A. hon. C.F. of that college, who resides at Thorrington. The principal portion of the land belongs to the trustees of the late James Hines esq. The soil is mixed, producing choice wheat; subsoil, gravel. The area of the parish, which is well watered, is 1,185 acres; the population in 1931 was 298.
