The Historical Directory of Pubs in the South East of England, including London

Search the Historical Pubs site for the South East of England by street address, surname and known pub names powered by FreeFind
If you have a query then try the search engine first, if you have something to add to the historical Pubs site, please email - and as an added incentive, - if you offer useful information for a Public House or Beer House, then I will usually add lots of extra detail / landlords. All non-copyright pictures are always welcome; BUT, if I do not have relevant pictures on the site, then I do not know where to find them.

George & Dragon, Foulness Island

George & Dragon, Foulness Island 1972

1972, by D. Barrett

Supplied by Edmund King via Caroline Graham

Built about 1650, the George & Dragon was originally three weather boarded cottages. But has since undergone many changes. Until the 19th century, the Island, because of its remote location, was the refuge of many a criminal and wanted man. It was also the ideal spot for all kinds of illegal pursuits: dog fighting, smuggling and even deliberate shipwrecking. One of the most popular diversions inthe 1800's was bare fist fighting. Fights took place outside the George & Dragon. The most famous fighter in the area was James Bennewith, whose mother was the licensee.

I get hundreds of emails every day, fortunately most 'spam mails' are deleted by my mail scan settings. The final emails are delivered to various email addresses, and replying to these are not always successful. If you do not hear from me in a timely fashion, please feel free to email again, I do not mind! This is a pure PUBS history site, I doubt if I know where the PUBS are NOW, but try the site for where they were a hundred years ago, again enjoy!
