* Provided by Tony Harris, the grandson of Thomas & Emma, who relates:

"Thomas had to retire about 1946 due to increasing ill health & they ran off-licenses for a time after that. The Railway Hotel was on the east side of the High Street immediately south of a level crossing across the High Street; indeed it was possible to view the trains from the upstairs sitting room of the pub, but not advisable to open the windows due to smoke!   I spent some time there during the war & occasionally as a lad helped out unofficially in the cellar well out of sight.   At that time there was a yard at the rear of the pub with various outbuildings/old stables & at the eastern end of the site a bowling green. Although he spent all those years in the lincensed trade Thomas was a teetotaller"

Thomas previously ran the Cross Keys in Chadwell St. Mary.

** "Hi, More on Reginald Alfred Hollingsbee from a distant cousin Ian Hollingsbee.

Reginald Alfred was born on 26th October 1897 at 22 New Town, Ashford. His father was Alfred James (1872) from Samuels (1814) branch of Hollingsbee’s. His mother was Adelaide DODD and the father’s occupation is given as Shunter on Railway. He joined the Essex Army in WW1 becoming an Aircraftsman first class and was awarded the French Medaille Militaire. His army number was 313774. Reginald married Rosina Florence Emma HARDWICK when he was 30 years old and she 26 years on 11th August 1928. Their occupations are given as “Secretary”, Reginald is living at 'Parish of Stifford, Grays Essex' and Rosina is at 43 Hanover Buildings, W.1. They married at St. Anselms Church, Davies Street, London. One of the Witnesses is a H. H. Hollingsbee?

Reginald was later employed as a licensed victualler and landlord of the Railway Hotel, High Street, Grays Thurrock now known as the Pullman Tavern.

Reginald died on 14th January 1961 at the age of 63 from cirrhosis of the liver. The witness was his daughter Miss M. Hollingsbee and the address of his daughter is given as ‘The Acorn, Crammerville Street, Stifford Clays, Greys Thunnock.’ His occupation is recorded as a Licensed Victualler and he died at “Orsett Lodge” Orsett.

Reginald’s wife died before him in 1956 age 54. "

I get hundreds of emails every day, fortunately most 'spam mails' are deleted by my mail scan settings. The final emails are delivered to various email addresses, and replying to these are not always successful. If you do not hear from me in a timely fashion, please feel free to email again, I do not mind! This is a pure PUBS history site, I doubt if I know where the PUBS are NOW, but try the site for where they were a hundred years ago, again enjoy!
