Duke of Wellington, Hatfield Peverel

29th July 2001
The Duke of Wellington was run by David & Mary (nee Steele) Mills from circa 1902 until 7th June 1914 when David died. Mary and their daughter, Winifred Mary, then ran the Wheatsheaf until circa 1922. It is believed that Mary Steele was cut off from her, wealthy, family for marrying "beneath her".
Information supplied by Mervyn Davies - David Mills was his Granduncle.
I lived at the Duke during the war, my father took the pub over on the 16th december 1941 at the cost of 250 pounds for fixtures fittings. the rent being 60 pound per year.the previous owner had [allegedly - Kevans note] recently been imprisoned for receiving stolen goods, his sentence was 12 months.notable events during my fathers tenure, apart from the war which raged until 1945,were a range of piggeries being puchased from MR K WRIGHT for the sum of 12 pounds in 1942. on 23.03.44 braintree R.D.C. requisitioned part of the 'draw-up' to site a water tank. This was taken over by the county council on 30.03.48. possibly by the fire service at a nominal rent of 1 pound per year .the tank was demolished in 1956. mains water was connected in 1934 mains electricity was connected in march 1932. My father Mr E.A.G C .Cox. vacated the the duke on july 5th 1949 when we moved to Australia. MR L E WADE took over from my father he paid 688.pounds two shillings and 6 pence *****
