Barry Davie was two years of age when in 1935 his parents took over the tenancy of the Old Kings Head at Stock in Essex. At the age of eleven, whilst attending the Billericay Secondary School, he was asked by his history master as to what event occurred in 1666. He promptly replied that it was when Trumans Brewery was started!
For many years Barry helped his parents in the business and in 1967 his mother, who had been widowed in 1954, had the licence transferred to him.
The Old Kings Head is approximately 400 years old and although major alterations were made nine years ago, the house, which comprises two bars, still keeps its 16th Century appearance.
Barry Davies main hobby is the study and renovation of vintage and veteran cars. The interest probably stems from his father who, prior to entering the licensed trade, was the chauffeur of a Rolls Royce in Southend. Barry himself is now the proud owner of four vintage Rolls Royces, the oldest of which was manufactured in 1928 and another is a Phantom II which belonged to Lord Portarlington. Furthermore, outside the house, squatting on the roof of the ladies toilet, is a 1930 Austin 7! - Black Eagle Journal ***

The saloon bar is full of veteran car components, such as motor horns and number plates from all parts of the world. As can be seen from the photograph, a showcase containing radiator mascots, exhaust whistles, oil headlamps etc fits snugly and attractively into the wall. As a contrast, opposite hangs a penny farthing bicycle.
