"Philip Scruby, a thatcher built a beerhouse known as the Wheat sheaf on a roadside strip of land c 1845 and sold it in 1852 to the Chelmsford brewers, Wells and Perry. It was licensed as an ale house from 1872 or earlier. In 1898, Wells and Perry surrendered the license on the grant of new license for the Railway Inn, now the Norton Barge, in Cold Norton and the Wheat Sheaf became a private house." - village history board in Stow Maries church ***
