This coaching inn was present by 1492 and was rebuilt as the Cock Hotel in 1894. Although long closed, the premises are still standing and used as a mixture of retail and residential. ***

My Gt-gt-grandfather was William Liles Hayden who was landlord of the Cock
Inn, in Waltham Abbey. Previously he was a tailor with his own shop in
Bishops Stortford and lived there until at least 1865. The Kelly's directory
lists him as landlord in 1870 but in fact he died in August 1869; this is
typical of Trade Directories. Unfortunately his change of career did not
suit him and the cause of his death was `Delirium Tremens`! I wonder if his
wife Mary had already left him before he died as she remarried in 1870 and
was then living in Camberwell. However by 1871 Mary, her 6 children and her
new husband Joseph Phipps were back at the Cock Inn; and Kelly's directory
lists him as landlord until 1878. ******
