The Historical Directory of Pubs in the South East of England, including London

Search the Historical Pubs site for the South East of England by street address, surname and known pub names powered by FreeFind
If you have a query then try the search engine first, if you have something to add to the historical Pubs site, please email - and as an added incentive, - if you offer useful information for a Public House or Beer House, then I will usually add lots of extra detail / landlords. All non-copyright pictures are always welcome; BUT, if I do not have relevant pictures on the site, then I do not know where to find them.

Ordnance Arms, High Bridge Street, Waltham Abbey

This pub was destroyed by a German V2 rocket in 1945. It is the second building on the right hand side, the one that projects into High Bridge Street.  **

It closed when it was destroyed by the V2 rocket on 7th March 1945, and the licensee at that time was Mrs. Vera May (who subsequently took over the license of the King William IV in Hoddesdon, Herts.) Apparently my father was one of the first people to get through to the Ordnance Arms after the blast, and was instrumental in extracting Mrs. May from the rubble.

I was also involved with that V2 rocket. I understand that it fell during the afternoon, and usually I would have been in my pram located underneath a plate glass window that was blown in by the blast. However, I understand that I was showing some slight symptoms of a cold on this day, so my parents had (fortunately?) put my pram in front of a fire, away from the window.

I get hundreds of emails every day, fortunately most 'spam mails' are deleted by my mail scan settings. The final emails are delivered to various email addresses, and replying to these are not always successful. If you do not hear from me in a timely fashion, please feel free to email again, I do not mind! This is a pure PUBS history site, I doubt if I know where the PUBS are NOW, but try the site for where they were a hundred years ago, again enjoy!
