In 1768 the tenant was Francis King, Yeoman of little Braxted who died C1801. His executors, William Sims and Robert King
sold the house and land in 1810 as follows:
                    " The Public House called Wickham Chequers and arable close of 1 1/2 Acres to the occupier Alice Matilda Peppercorn for £627.00. She died in 1818 and the occupier John Boltwood, Victualler, became the tennant. He mortgaged the property to William Sims for £600.00. Sims died in 1823 without issue and his widow Sarah Sims was admitted by mortgage rights. She died in 1853 leaving the estate to her niece Charlotte King, Spinster of Witham.  Henry Golding Barrett was the occupier." *****
